Helen Ophelia Reed Tokes

TOKES, Helen Ophelia Reed, age 78, passed away at NHC HealthCare Scott in Lawrenceburg, TN, on April 29, 2014.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Wiseman and Ollie Louise Walker Wiseman; brother, Harold Wiseman; and sisters, Jean Baird and Shirley Branson.  

She is survived by her daughter, Nancie (Gary) Poland of Loretto, TN; sisters, Betty McCool, Carolyn (Raymond) Watson, Brenda Curtis, Kay Smith, Rita Richardson, Mary (Ed) Pitts; one grandchild, Matthew Holland; and several nieces and nephews.

Willie Wright

   Willie Wright, age 85 of Newport News, VA, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Warwick Forest, Newport News, VA.

   She was a native of Lawrence County, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband: Eldridge Wright; her parents: Lena Smith and Lonnie Graves; her brothers: Andrew Graves, L.C. Graves, Edd Graves, Buddy Graves, Roy Graves, Bobby Graves and four sisters: Geneva Flatt, Ruby Alden, Okeleen Haines, and Lula Mae Rice.

   She is survived by three daughters: Fay Wilburn (Gerald) of Lawrenceburg, Lena Markus (Terry) of Newport News, VA and Lois Grundman of Eldorado Hills, CA; two sons: Joe Ferguson of Jasper, TN, and Curtis Ferguson of Virginia; three grandchildren: Billy Wilburn, Gary Taylor and David Taylor; three great grandchildren: Austin Wilburn, Katelyn Wilburn and Lisa Taylor; two brothers: Charles Graves and Junior Graves; two sisters: Christine Jones and Syble New.

   Graveside services for Willie Wright were conducted Friday, May 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Old Ethridge Cemetery in Ethridge, TN, with Teverend Donald Goodrum officiating. Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home was in charge of all the arrangements. 

Lester Lopp

Lester Lopp, age 68, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence. He was a native of Westpoint, TN, and of the Baptist Faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Mitchell and Edna Irene Luna Lopp; his wife, Sondra Diane Lopp; and two brothers, Carl Lopp and Charles Lopp.

He is survived by three sons: Dewayne & Shirley Lopp, Leoma, TN, Buck & April Lopp, Lawrenceburg, TN, and Steve Dickson, Lawrenceburg, TN; two daughters: Charity Mendez, Lawrenceburg, TN, and Stephanie & Daniel Vargas, Lawrenceburg, TN; two brothers: James Lopp, St. Joseph, TN, and Chester Lopp, Lawrenceburg, TN; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Edward Leo White

Mr. Edward Leo White, age 79 of Lawrenceburg, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Countryside Nursing Home.

Mr. White’s family will celebrate his life with private services. He will then be laid to rest in the Harmony Family Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. White was born September 21, 1934 in Lawrenceburg and was the son of Walter White and Lydia Vanderford White Eaves. He served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed camping and fishing, but used his creative abilities in woodworking.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Harold D. White and his mother-in-law & father-in-law: Angie and Collie Mattox. Mr. White is survived by his wife of 61 years: Carlean Mattox White; two daughters: Lisa Kiddy and Cindy Smith; a brother: Robert (Sybil) White; two sisters: Marie (James) Stewart and Iva Sue (Tyrone) Shelton; 4 grandchildren: Dillon Glover, Cody Glover, Justin Blackwood and Caleb Kiddy; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Collie (Mary) Mattox, Clay (Francis) Mattox, Lucille (Bobby) Franklin, Hazel Perry (Roy Posey) and Kathleen (Paul) Violet. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O.Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or at www.alz.org. They also wish to thank the Keestone Senior Community, Countryside Health Care and CARIS Hospice for their special care and support.

Wanda Lee Shepherd

Wanda Lee Shepherd, age 78, of Summertown, TN passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Mt. Pleasant Health and Rehabilitation in Mount Pleasant, TN. She was a native of Lepanto, AR, a homemaker, and a member of Summertown Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Wilson Lane; her mother, Oma Lou Smith Wiggins; her husband, Charles Franklin Shepherd; one son, Larry Franklin Shepherd; two grandsons, Paul Gray and Michael Gray; her step-father, C.J. Wiggins; and one step-daughter, Marie Smith.

She is survived by daughters: Lucy Gray (Paul), Three Oaks Community, and Carolyn Riddle, Summertown, TN; sons: Wayne Shepherd (Tina), Summertown, TN, and Robert Shepherd (Chris), Summertown, TN; step-daughter: Ruby Smith, Lawrenceburg, TN; sister: Mary Louise Brassfield, Ethridge, TN; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive.

George H. Thornton

George H. Thornton, age 65, of Five Points, TN passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg, TN. He was a native of Carbon Hill, AL, retired from Murray Ohio, and a member of Five Points Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one son, Shawn Thornton; and one great-grandson, Blade Brewer.

He is survived by wife: Pam Thornton, Five Points, TN; mother: Callie Thornton, Russellville, AL; one daughter: Heather Owens, Lawrenceburg, TN; three brothers: John Thornton, Russellville, AL, James Thornton, Birmingham, AL, and David Thornton, Phil Campbell, AL; one sister: Melinda Thornton, Russellville, AL; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Herb & Ruby Mosley, Five Points, TN; one brother-in-law: Jeff Mosley, Five Points, TN; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Holland Edwards Grisham

Elizabeth Holland Edwards Grisham, age 86, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She was a native of Ethridge, TN, retired from National Life and a member of Pulaski Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cordie Willice and Sadie Florence Kerr Holland; her first husband, Clifford Edwards; one brother, C.W. Holland, Jr.; and two sisters, Christine Holland Hill and Doris Holland Grantham.

She is survived by husband: Bill Grisham, Lawrenceburg, TN; two sons: Jimmy Edwards (Linda), Goodlettsville, TN, and Tommy Edwards, Gallatin, TN; three daughters: Linda Edwards Douglas (Gil), Goodlettsville, TN, Patsy Edwards Gupton (Randy), Whites Creek, TN, and Barbara Edwards, Goodlettsville, TN; three step-sons: Ken Grisham (Anna), Mobile, AL, Jim Grisham (Connie), Birmingham, AL, and Andrew Grisham (Chris), Brentwood, TN; three step-daughters: Margaret Ford, Augusta, GA, Jane Carpenter (Mark), Jonesboro, AR, and Rita Thompson (Cullie), Cullman, AL; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Harley Holland (Geneva), Ethridge, TN, and Dan Holland (Mary Nell), Ethridge, TN; two sisters: Mildred Buffalo (Bill), Lawrenceburg, TN, and Suella Gowen, Michigan; one sister-in-law: Elizabeth Holland, Lenoir City, TN.

Sue Ayers

Sue Ayers, 80, of Summertown, TN, died peacefully Wednesday night, April 23, 2014, at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, TN. She was the daughter of the late J.S. and Lula Smith Woodlee of McMinnville, TN. She attended McMinnville Elementary School and Dibrell High School. She was a member of Bybee's Springs Church of Christ in McMinnville before moving to Lawrence County.

She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was married to the late Bobby Everett Ayers, and they raised four daughters together. She worked at home and on the farm caring for her family until her daughters were grown. She had a tender spot for children and the elderly and worked at Kiddie Cottage Day Care in Mt. Pleasant, TN and Ms. Bobbie's Day Care in Summertown, TN. She then worked as a nurses' aide at Countryside Nursing Home, Hidden Acres, and NHC of Lawrenceburg, TN where she also took on the job as Activities Director. Her tenderness and affection made her a favorite of the residents. She took care of her ailing mother-in-law and then her mother until their deaths.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Summertown Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for 2 and 3 year olds for 40 years Mrs. Sue influenced the lives of several generations of children. She was well loved and is still known in the Summertown Community and beyond as Mrs. Sue.

She is survived by daughters, Janice Smith of Cullman, AL, Linda (Danny) Lasater and April (Tim) McCormack both of Columbia, TN, and Alice (Randy) Pope of Summertown, TN. She was MawMaw to six grandchildren, David Smith and Harley Pope both of Summertown, TN, Deena McClendon of Cullman, AL, Julie Bergman of Miami, FL, Seth Lasater of Spring Hill, TN, and Courtney Nutt of Waynesboro, TN; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Active pallbearers will be David Smith, Seth Lasater, Harley Pope, Lance Nutt, Briar Pierce and Roy Ayers.

Funeral services for Sue Ayers were conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Sunday, April 27, 2014, with Ricky Glass and Brian Gregory officiating. Interment followed at Brace Cemetery in Lawrence County, TN. Family suggests memorials be made to the Sunday school program at Summertown Church of Christ or Brace Cemetery fund. Travis Hood

Travis Hood, age 78, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL. He was a native of Lawrence County, TN, retired from Murray Ohio, and a member of Meadow View Baptist Church. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mina and Pauline Nutt Hood; and two sisters, Willodean Gobble and Linda Bassham.

He is survived by wife: Velma Tripp Hood, Lawrenceburg, TN; one son: Blake Hood (Amber), Spring Hill, TN; one daughter: Bridget Martin (Robert), Lawrenceburg, TN; one sister: Minaleen White, Lawrenceburg, TN; six grandchildren: Natoschia Sharp, Khearra Mosley, Abby Lee Hood, Krizten Martin, Alekz Martin, and Drew Martin; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Travis Hood were conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 4:00 PM Sunday, April 27, 2014, with Charles Gresham officiating. Interment followed at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg, TN with full military honors. Pallbearers were: Brian Shaw, Jason Belew, Shane Garner, Tommy White, Larry Gobble, and Kenneth Knott. Family suggests memorials be made to Meadow View Baptist Church. Claude James Kirk

  Claude James Kirk, age 76 of Anderson, AL, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at NHC Brink after an extended illness.

  He was a native of Sheffield, AL, a United States Army Veteran, retired machine operator from Champion Paper and a member of Corum Chapel Baptist Church.

  He is survived by his wife: Mary Kirk of Anderson, AL; one daughter: Lorie Noblit and husband, Jeff of Loretto, TN; two grandchildren: Shaun Noblit of Columbia, TN, and Kayla Noblit of Anderson, AL; one brother: O’ther Kirk of Sheffield, AL; one sister-in-law: Mildred Griffin of Sheffield, AL; several nieces and nephews also survive.

  Funeral services for Claude James Kirk were conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Loretto Memorial Chapel with Michael Poff officiating. Interment followed in Harmon Cemetery, Lexington, AL. Loretto Memorial Chapel was in charge of all arrangements. 

Wanda A. Moore

  Wanda A. Moore, age 74 of Saint Joseph, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

  She was a native of Lawrence County, a seamstress, and of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents: Jasper and Stella Butler; two brothers: James and Eugene Butler; one grandson: Benjamin Dotson.

  She is survived by one son: Doyle Moore and wife, Mylinda of Saint Joseph; one daughter: Glenda Daniel and husband, Wayne of Iron City; five grandchildren: Amanda Dotson, Anthony Dotson and wife, Caitlin, Ashley Dotson, Bronica Moore and Brooke Moore; three great-grandchildren: Aven, Trey and Myla.

  A private memorial service for Wanda A. Moore will be held at a later date. Loretto Memorial Chapel is in charge of all the arrangements. 

Barbara Nell Stephenson Gang

  Barbara Nell Stephenson Gang, age 80 of Lawrenceburg, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

  She was a homemaker and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

  She was preceded in death by her husband: William (Bill) Gang Jr.; her parents: Osa Leon Stephenson and Julia Susann Stephenson Griggs.

  She is survived by two sons: Mark (Kristy) Gang of Lawrenceburg and William Trent (Terri) Gang of Ethridge; one daughter: Tracey Grinnell of Lawrenceburg; one sister: Perrie (Waylon) Wright of Florence, AL; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

  Funeral services for Barbara Nell Stephenson Gang were conducted Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with Father Joseph Mundakal officiating. Interment followed in the Calvary Cemetery in Lawrenceburg. Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home was in charge of all the arrangements. 

William C (Buddy) Lanier

William C (Buddy) Lanier died April 24, 2014, in Kingston NY , due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.  He was 88 years of age.  He attended Loretto High School before graduating from Shelbyville Central High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Naval Reserve’s V-5 program, as an aviation cadet,the same year.  After the war was over, he enrolled in the Akron University School of Engineering, and received a BSEE degree in 1950.  He worked for IBM in both Kingston and Poughkeepsie , NY, and retired in 1987, after 37 years of service.  

 William was born Jan. 1, 1926 in Iron City, Tennessee, to the late William Lawrence Lanier and Cecil Smith Lanier.  His wife, the former Mildred M. Miller, died on March 28, 2004.  He is survived by his three children; Linda K. Lanier, of Saugerties, NY, Peggy Jane Driscoll, of Rhinebeck, NY, and Mark S. Lanier, of Saugerties, NY, as well as two grandchildren, James Driscoll, of Brooklyn, NY, and Katherine Driscoll of Rhinebeck, NY.  He has many relatives from his mother’s side of the family, in and around Shelbyville and Murfreesboro.

 Arrangements have been entrusted to Keyser Funeral and Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY, where a memorial will be held on May 3rd, 2014 Inurnment will take place in Smith Chapel Cemetery, at a later date.

Diane Brazier Pigg

Diane Brazier Pigg, age 59, of Smyrna, TN passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, TN. She was a native of Ohio and a member of Creekmont General Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J. W. "Dub" and Marie Rochell Brazier; and one brother, Johnny Brazier.

She is survived by husband of 11 years: Ronnie Pigg, Smyrna, TN; one sister: Emmanola Caudill, La Vergne, TN; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Diane Brazier Pigg were conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 29, 2014, with Eddie Slaubaugh officiating. Interment followed at Rochell Cemetery in Lawrence County, TN. Condolences may be sent by way of our website at www.nealfuneralhome.net.
